You start the grant process by finding the specific grant that you think you might be eligibly for. Once you do this part of the process you can start the small business grant application process.

Start by sending the government agency or institution a letter stating your intent. This letter is to inform the grantor that you want to submit a formal grant proposal. Your letter of intent should be a miniaturized business plan stating what you plan to do with the money summarizing your business plan, your background, and how much money you need.

Think of this letter as if you are submitting a resume to a potential employer. Sometimes they will respond favorably. Sometimes they will respond no so favorably. Sometime they won’t respond at all. Basically you have take your chance and see what happens.

Remember that whoever you are sending this letter of intent to has no idea who you are. Take some time in your letter sell yourself and your objectives. Help them see your true intent and how it will benefit them as well as be money well granted.

That’s about it. The hardest part of course is finding an applicable grant to your home business situation. A great place to start is always the Small Business Association’s web site located at www.sba.gov.
